Stuff from episode 1x18.
Cora is Regina's domineering happiness-killing mother, who lives vicariously through her daughter like a manic stage mother from hell. The actress who portrays Cora, Barbara Hershey, wasn't kidding when she said Cora makes the mother from Black Swan look weak. Cora also makes Joan Crawford look weak and would probably beat her with wire hangers before making her cry Uncle.
This has got to be one of the saddest moments of the episode. If your mother suspends you in the air then uses straps like boa constrictors to threaten you, and the only way to make her stop is by pleading like an errant child, "Please, I'll be good," that's not only demeaning it's sad. Regina taking off afterwards like the devil was chasing her makes you wonder what type of punishment Cora inflicted upon Regina in the past that forced Regina to learn the proper response to soothe the savage beast.
Regina's tryst is interrupted by a shrieking Snow White flying by on a runaway horse. Regina plays the hero by jumping on her own horse, chasing down Snow then saving her life. Regina also tells Snow she should face her fears when Snow says she'll never ride again. This might suggest that Regina taught Snow to be strong.
*Shout-out to casting for choosing such a dead ringer for Ginnifer Goodwin.
Snow's father, King Leopold, visits Regina to express his gratitude for saving Snow's life. Cora poofs a new Quinceañera dress onto Regina. King Leopold arrives and thanks Regina, and he also proposes. Cora hilariously answers, "Yes," while Regina is too stunned to speak. It's also interesting to note that Regina's father didn't want her to marry Leopold.
Everyone reacts to Leopold's proposal in their own way.
Henry: no...
Leopold's guard: Takes note of Henry's reaction for future reference
Regina: Whuh... who... where...? WHAT?
Cora: Happier than a pig in mud.
Cora wants to know if something is up with Regina. She plies her passive-aggressive interrogation techniques on Snow, and Snow unknowingly signs Daniel's death certificate by revealing that Regina and Daniel love each other.
Cora stops Daniel and Regina from eloping by flexing her magic muscles. But Regina is steadfast in her love for Daniel and despite her fear of Cora, she defies her mother, saying, "So what's your plan? You're going to keep us here forever? Because that's what you'll to have to do." Cora switches tactics and seems to relent. She pulls Daniel to the side to give him some parenting advice, which for Cora means a bit of sage wisdom mixed with a little Mayan heart sacrifice ritual. She smoothly punches through his chest, extracts his heart, and pulverizes it into itsy-bitsy dust particles.
Following the death of her true love, Cora wastes no time in preparing for Regina's wedding to Leopold. As Regina is fitted for her wedding dress, she stares ahead blankly and looks quite dead on her feet. Snow White enters and compliments her. Regina numbly replies until Snow mentions Daniel. Regina snaps out of it and questions Snow about the secret she told her. Snow admits that she told Cora about Regina and Daniel. Regina turns away from Snow, and in that instant any embers of goodness left in her after Daniel's death are extinguished as the Evil Queen that we know is born.
Regina learns that Cora set up the whole scenario with Snow White and the runaway horse. Cora denies it, but Regina's expression indicates that she knows wassup. Instead of rightfully assigning blame to Cora for Daniel's death, she gives her mother a faint smile then walks away muttering, "I shoulda let her die on that horse."
Kathryn looks like she took a tumble through a dirt dryer on high, but Kathryn's from Fairy Tale Land--folks born there are from hardy stock and tougher than a two-dollar steak. They don't let minor inconveniences such as the loss of a vital organ stop them from springing back to life.

- Mary Margaret's charges: Murder, Attempted Murder, Assault, Criminal Possession of a Weapon [similar to the charges Regina leveled against her Fairy Tale World]
- Mary Margaret's bail was $500,000
- The Spelling Bee winner's surname is Wilkins [Buffy shout-out?], and she's ten.
Questions Answered This Episode
- What did Snow do to Regina?
Snow White caught Regina and Daniel kissing. Regina explained to Snow that she and Daniel are in love, and she asked her to keep it a secret. Cora manipulated Snow into revealing Regina's secret then Cora killed Daniel. - Why is Regina evil?
Regina didn't surrender to the dark side until Daniel died. When he died, it appears a piece of Regina also died. Add Cora's unyielding tide of crap to Regina's grief and you get one disturbed individual. - In episode 1x02, why did Regina say the following to her father, "Oh, now you're trying to protect me?"
Because he did the equivalent of jack shit while Cora was abusing Regina. There's also the desperate "Dad help me" look she gave him when King Leopold proposed. Henry's response? A head shake.
Other Stuff
- Cora is the miller's daughter.
- It was all Mr. Gold's idea to frame Mary Margaret.

wait, when did we learn that David is back on Team Mary Margaret? :/
ReplyDeleteWhen he was talkig to Emma.
Deletehe said to emma that he believes mm isnt guilty & wants to talk to her again but after last time MM doesnt wanna see him so emma didnt let him
Delete"Quinceañera dress" - LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm Mexican and that made me laugh because it's true. I don't think gringos will get it. Do Latinos own this website?
DeleteMy cousin wore a dress that looks just like Regina's blue dress to her quincenera she wore her hair the same way too.
DeleteYou know what I think. I think that Henry never protected Regina because he was scared of Cora. We have not seen him exhibit any magical power and it very well could be that he did not find out what an evil witch she was until he said I do. Then it was to late. Henry may be afraid Cora will kill him and then he can not even support Regina at all. Regina is also totally wrong imo to hate Snow, but I think she does because she is also scared of her mother. Or she just does not understand the conversation that Snow had with Cora. I also think. Okay, this could be a spoiler. I don't know. But I read an interview with Robert Carlyle and he indicated that possibly the curse was cast for Rumpelstiltskin not Regina. So I am thinking that Regina somehow hurt Bale or made him leave and Rumpelstiltskin wants revenge on Regina for taking his child away. And that is what all this is about. I think he played her hatred for Snow, thinking all the while Regina is a nutcase child abuser because I think he knows to that Snow did not do anything wrong.
ReplyDeleteHenry should have tried to run with Regina. Staying with Cora was bad for both of them.
DeleteTotally.
DeleteIf Cora is the poor Miller's daughter... doesn't that maybe tie her into the Rumplestilskin storyline?
DeleteI think she got all her power from Rumple. I can't wait to see that. I wonder who will play young Cora, Lana Parrilla maybe?
DeleteCan Daniel still be alive?
ReplyDelete@ Anon 5:39 I don't think anyone who gets their heart crushed and turned into dust can still be alive. But when their heart is in the vault they are. From what we've seen from Cora and Regina hearts are taken as a means of killing who they belong to when the urge strikes. Or in other words, once one of these twits takes your heart, you're screwed, lol.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else notice how much more pale Regina looks in the wedding gown scene with Snow? I think she seriously has toxic overload due to Cora and she hates Snow to because she can not go off on her because Leopold might execute her. Just another reason in her now totally warped mind why she plans to torture Snow White later. Although I think Regina was somewhat evil even before Daniel died. Because if she wasn't I don't think she would blamed Snow at all and she would of just run away from Cora forever.
ReplyDeleteThe "Please I'll be good" scene (2nd pic from top) was a less violent version of what Regina did to Maleficent in 1x02. Like mother like daughter, and then some.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading about the wedding gown scene I think Cora took Regina's heart. Regina really does look dead and numb. Maybe it's just grief.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she took Regina's heart---she just killed it. :(
DeleteI wonder whatever happened to Cora? It could not have been good.
ReplyDeleteProbally, Regina's first request as queen is:"Exacute my mother." Thats what I would do.
DeleteThe girl who plays Snow White as a kid was in the show Wizards Of Waverly Place as Maxine.
DeleteThis coming from "Maleficent" lol.
DeleteAnyone think Cora is The Millers Daughter? She's a queen, she has a child, and she said to Regina,"After all the deals I made to get you here?".
ReplyDeleteThey SAID that she was the Miller's daughter. YES.
DeleteThey did mention that Cora is the Miller's Daughter. Regina's "true love" said, "your mother should understand she was a miller's daughter"(or something like that).
DeleteCora's not a queen. They're rich but not royalty.
Deletelol "Daniel Puts a Ring on It"
