[+] ► [-] Jefferson Bio
Jefferson owns a magical hat that enables him to journey to other worlds. The hat creates a wormhole that leads to the inside of his hat, which looks like the manifestation of String Theory; it's lined with doors that lead to multiple parallel worlds.
Regina visits him because she needs to get to Wonderland, stating something of hers has made its way there and she wants it back. Jefferson informs her that he's no longer in the world-hopping business. She lays a guilt trip on him by emphasizing his poverty and asking him what kind of future he could possibly give his daughter with such little means. She offers riches if he helps, but he's adamant in his refusal so Regina departs.
Regina disguises herself as a toy peddler. Jefferson's daughter, Grace, wants a stuffed rabbit from Regina's toy cart and asks her father to buy it for her. Jefferson is broker than a one-wheeled bicycle, so he asks Regina if she'll accept less than full price for the rabbit. Regina refuses, humorously claiming, "It's the economy, you understand."
Jefferson and Grace leave her cart disheartened and disappointed.
Jefferson sorts through his damned-if-I-do-damned-if-I-don't dilemma and decides that helping Regina is better than having his daughter live in poverty.
He reciprocates Regina's visit and agrees to help. He opens a portal to Wonderland through his hat. The Wonderland entrance rules are simple: the number of people who enter must equal the number of people who exit.
Jefferson and Regina enter Wonderland, and Regina retrieves the object she wanted. The object is her father. Since only two people can leave Wonderland, Regina screws Jefferson over and traps him in Wonderland then exits with her father.
Jefferson is taken before the Queen of Hearts, who orders him beheaded. But Wonderland lives up to the wonder part of its name as Jefferson continues to live though his head has been severed from his body.
The Queen of Hearts demands to know how Jefferson entered Wonderland. He admits he used his hat, but he no longer has it. He is ordered to make a new magical hat to send himself home, but he says, "I can't. A hat without magic is just a hat." We last see him in Wonderland, in a massive room, surrounded by his failed attempts to make a new magical hat and teetering on the brink of madness determined to get back to his daughter. It is presumed that he did indeed make it back to Fairy Tale Land because he's in Storybrooke.
Fast forward to Storybrooke and, unlike 99.9% of the town, Jefferson is aware of the curse and retains all his memories of Fairy Tale Land. He holds Emma and Mary Margaret against their will then coerces Emma into making him a new magical hat to escape Storybrooke and the curse. Emma makes him a new hat then knocks him out. She and Mary Margaret make a break for it, but Jefferson interrupts their escape with his freshly made hat, a tackle and a gun. During the ensuing scuffle, Mary Margaret hides for a bit while Snow White surfaces, slams a croquet mallet in Jefferson's back then front-kicks him out the window.His new hat presumably works because there is a whoosh sound and he's gone.

Dude, what did you expect? She's a freakin' Evil Queen.

The definition of insanity.

Maybe he didn't go back to Fairytale Land, and that's why he can remember better than most (without having to be in a dream state/jogged memory by Emma), because he's still in Wonderland.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason he can remember so much is because he was mad, I don't think the curse has special rules for the mentally insaine, so, like he said, his knowledge IS his curse. He never returned to FTL, which is why he never comes to town, and is "trapped" in his house and the surrounding areas (Wonderland)
ReplyDeleteI don't think Regina brought Wonderland to Storybrooke. How could she and why would she? My guess is Jefferson made it back to FTL maybe he meets Alice and she helps him.
DeleteI like the M-Theory explanation for this: if each door in that hat was a passage to another world, then possibly there are doors in Storybrooke like that. For example like the trapdoor that led to Regina's heart vault, or better yet, the door that led to the scene with Nurse Ratched, Chief Bromden, and Belle. Belle clearly doesn't belong in Ken Kesey's book. But 1) she is supposedly mad, and 2) maybe that means she remembers everything.
DeleteMaybe the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest scene was another reality nestled in our own, by virtue of being part of a little area where books mix with reality until you don't know which is which. Definitely real-world-ish, definitely sad and depressing. And so, Belle is as misplaced in it as the Hatter was in Wonderland. As for bringing Wonderland to Storybrooke, probably that is impossible - but other realities? Well, why not, as they say?
I think he can remember, because he travels to different worlds and I don't think he was born in fairy tale land!
ReplyDeleteJefferson knows about several plot elements - the curse; the Once Upon A Time book; there are infinite real worlds, some with magic, some without; bad things happen to people who try to leave Storybrooke; "young Henry" is Emma's biological son; he believes that Emma has some sort of magic about her; he says that he's been stuck in the house for 28 years, so he was brought there at the same time as everyone else; he knows that his daughter's name is Paige in this world; He says his curse is that he remembers his daughter and that he's got a beautiful home, but that his daughter doesn't know who he is - whether he's speaking of Regina's curse or he's speaking metaphorically about curses, we can't be sure.
ReplyDeleteSome things we can be pretty sure about:
Jefferson had visited Wonderland in the past, because he said he hated it, and he knew it by name.
he knows that Regina knows who the Queen of Hearts is;
he doesn't appear to be under the memory blocking part of the curse - either he was never under it, or he had his memory restored to him - the same way that the huntsman was ultimately able to remember;
somebody has to be keeping him provided with things like food, materials, etc;
Jefferson's hat can't be the only way to enter Wonderland - because "old Henry" (Regina's dad) was taken there somehow, by a different method.
It's obviously not easy to travel between worlds, because Regina needed Jefferson's service to do it, and the Queen of Hearts wondered how he did it.
Some things we don't know for sure, but we can probably surmise:
When Regina and old Henry returned from Wonderland, she probably kept the hat. She could have destroyed it, but I don't think so.
What we don't know:
When Regina entered the Queen of Hearts' vault, there was another compartment with a glowing pulsing light. What was in that?
Jefferson wants to get Emma to make him a hat so that he can go "home", but we don't know whether he now considers Wonderland to be his home, or whether he means Fairy Tale Land. If he does mean Fairy Tale Land, then how can he go home if that world is still under the curse?
What happened to Jefferson when he fell out the window?
He went into his hat.
DeleteApparently not.
DeleteWe now know that Regina kept the Hat. We still don't know what happened to him when he fell out the window, but I assume we'll earn that sometime. Don't take assumptions and treat it like reality anon. YOu have to be sure.
DeleteI think he crawled into his basement window while MM and Emma were coming outside. A window was open behind them while they were talking. Wouldn't all of them be open if he was letting in air?
DeleteI think the hat is a portal...and that Regina picked it up after she and her dad exited. Aka: The hat was still sitting on the floor of her castle.
DeleteAnyone notice what Mary Margret hit Jefferson in the head with? The krokae thing you hit the ball with. And we all know that's a Queen Of Hearts likes!
ReplyDeletecroque mallet. IN the movies, the queen of Hearts used flamingoes.
DeleteIs the couple that "Paige" is living with in Storybrooke as her "parents" the same people who babysat for Grace when Jefferson went to the EQ's castle to take her to Wonderland? I didn't think anything else could, but this episode made me hate Regina even more. I really hope we get to see her at some point drop dead.
ReplyDeleteYes, they are her FTL world neighbors who babysat her. But he never came back.
DeleteDoes anyone know his quote about different worlds? Some worlds have magic, some don't, and some worlds need it? Starts off with how ignorant or stupid people are for thinking that their world is the only one...? I think. I don't remember which is why I ask.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Here's the quote
Delete"A real world. How arrogent are you to think yours is the only one? There are infinite more. You have to open your mind. THey touch one another, pressing up in a long line of lands, each just as real as the last. All have their own rules. Some have magic some don't... and some NEED magic. Like this one."
Could his name be from the band Jefferson Airplane who wrote 'White Rabbit'?
ReplyDeleteDOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE "HAT TRICK" IS SUPPOSE TO BE ON THE TIMELINE?.
ReplyDeleteIt's after Leopold, I know, because Regina has her own castle and is wearing black. After Leo dies she found out "black suits me."
DeleteTHANK YOU
Deletethe blue fairy said there was no other way to other worlds besides that one bean, obviously she didnt know about his hat... maybe this will come to play later......
ReplyDeleteI love the theory that he meets Alice!! I'm a huge fan of this show and the mad hatter is one of my favorite characters.
ReplyDeleteWhat's odd to me is that he has zero problem calling the queen "Regina". It's like he knows her. Maybe they are related? Odd..How would she have known about the hat in the first place? How would she know the doll would effect him in the way it did? It's like they have a history.
They do. He said he used to work for her.
DeleteRegina: "I have a job for you."
Jefferson: "I don't do that anymore."
I'm excited to see why Jefferson got Belle out. Was it revenge against Regina, or did he want to make a deal with Rumple that wouldn't allow Rumple to be on top? (Aka, Rumple would already recieve payment for the deal because he would have Belle.) I'm thinking both.
