Regina Says Good Morning to Emma

After failing to get rid of Emma with threats, Regina shifts into reverse and tries kindness. She pays Emma a visit armed with a smile and a basketful of apples. Much to Emma's bewilderment, Regina explains the hardiness of a Honerycrisp apple tree then offers the apples to Emma, and says Emma should enjoy them on her way back to Boston.

Uh, thanks, but you do realize this isn't a Honeycrisp apple, right?

Emma informs Regina that she's staying in Storybrooke for awhile since she's concerned about Henry. She also informs Regina that she can see through the kindness-charade. Regina drops the act and resorts to threats again, saying, "Don't underestimate me, Miss Swan. You have no idea what I'm capable of."

The Evil Queen Witch-Slaps Maleficent

The Evil Queen traded the Dark Curse for Maleficent's sleeping curse, but the sleeping curse failed. She calls on Maleficent and demands her curse back. They exchange barbs veiled in pleasantries for a bit, and Maleficent refuses to return the curse. She suggests the Evil Queen get a pet instead. The Evil Queen dislikes her suggestion and counters with her own suggestion: a fireball and a roomful of sharp murderous weapons. Maleficent is forced into defense, but  the Evil Queen overpowers her and retrieves the Dark Curse.

Confucius say, "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves."

The Evil Queen Casts the Dark Curse

The Evil Queen utilizes the granny shot to sink her prized steed's heart into the flames.

The Evil Queen convenes a council of sorts comprised of those with the darkest souls. She needs a lock of hair from each of them to cast the Dark Curse. In return, she promises them happiness. She wiggles her fingers, and the limbs on nearby trees come to life, threatening any who are hesitant. She then walks around collecting everyone's hair like an usher at church who's carrying an offering plate. All in attendance donate willingly to avoid that awkward moment when you have nothing to put in the offering plate and to avoid strangulation by tree.

Give or die.

The Evil Queen throws all the necessary ingredients for the Dark Curse into a bonfire, but her attempt to cast the Dark Curse is unsuccessful. After a lot of fanfare, the curse dissipates and nothing happens. Her failure doesn't escape the notice of a little gnome, who points out that she just flopped harder than a landed fish out of water. The Evil Queen is unhappy with his observation and rewards him by turning him to stone.

Regina Sets Up Emma

The face of innocence

To obtain more information about Henry, Emma visits his psychiatrist, Dr. Archie Hopper. Archie hands over Henry's case file, and Emma heads to her room at the inn to read it. Sheriff Graham comes knocking and arrests her because Archie claims she stole Henry's case file. In reality, Regina ordered him to give Emma the file. Mary Margaret bails Emma out of jail, and Emma visits Regina to express her feelings on being setup.

How Emma feels about being setup

Regina hears a chainsaw whirring and looks out the window to see the mutilation of her precious apple tree. She power walks outside to confront Emma and yells, "What the hell are you doing?" Emma replies ever so casually, "Picking apples." They have a little chat, and Emma threatens Regina with Regina's own threat as she says, "You come after me one more time and I'm coming back for the rest of this tree because, sister, you have no idea what I'm capable of."

The Evil Queen Visits Rumpelstiltskin

Frustrated at not being able to enact the Dark Curse, the Evil Queen goes to the source of the curse, Rumpelstiltskin, for help.

Rumpelstiltskin: Curse Maker

Before Rumpelstiltskin tells the Evil Queen anything about the curse, he wants a deal: In the new land [Storybrooke], he wants to have a comfortable life and the Evil Queen must heed his every request as long as he says please. The Evil Queen agrees to his terms.

Rumpelstiltskin can't believe the Evil Queen agrees to his terms.
What a funny little guy.

He tells her to make the curse work she needs the heart of the thing she loves most. She says she sacrificed her pet steed, and Rumpelstiltskin is so affronted that he lurches forward and grabs her by the throat. Amazingly, the Evil Queen doesn't flinch--as if being pounced upon and seized by the throat is an ordinary occurrence.

Rumpelstiltskin explains in his own way that a horse's heart simply will not do.

Rumpelstiltskin informs her that the heart she needs has to come from something far more precious. It must be the heart of the thing she loves most. She replies that her true love died because of Snow White. Rumpelstiltskin says there must be another that she truly loves, and she must kill that person if she wants to enact the curse.

The Evil Queen Kills Her Father

The Evil Queen needs her father's heart to cast the curse. She's reluctant and conflicted. Her father makes a case for himself by telling her they can begin anew, and she can find love again. She appears defeated and folds into his embrace. It seems as though she has given up the idea of retaliation and patricide, but vengeance screams its own case, and the Evil Queen surrenders to its voice instead of her father's. She rips out his heart with a few tears and an apology.
