Retro Easter Eggs | Secrets | Trivia

How old is Storybrooke? If we go by the year 2011, that would mean Storybrooke crashed into existence in 1983. How did we figure that? Simple. Emma was supposed to return 28 years after the curse was enacted and she's back!

Is there evidence of the early 80's? Here are some retro shoutouts!

Updates will be posted as retro stuff is spotted so check this page often. All new finds will be at the top.

  1. Rotary dial phone in MM's house, episode 6 when MM and Emma are having a drink (LOST whiskey).

  2. There's a rotary phone in the police station too and Granny's whole diner is retro. Archie also has a few retro stuff. We really wanted to stick to 80's stuff though. Yeah, there's a fire truck from the 50's up there, but that was just too cool not to post ;). Maybe there should be a different section for other decades.

The MacCutcheon Scotch Whisky bottle has been posted already on the Lost easter egg page.

  3. It seems Emma is the only one who has a cellphone, isn't it?

  4. Ooops, I should have said a "modern" cellphone...

  5. Also the hospital equipment and nurses' outfits in 1x03 were pretty 80s.

  6. Henry has a pretty nice computer, as show in this picture from the section about his clocks.

    1. Yeah, Henry's computer is recent. That's the reason it's not on our 80's retro list. ;)

  7. Kinda confused how OUaT is set in the 80's but somehow, Mary Margaret had credit card (which Henry stole) to go on Internet to find Emma?

    1. Once Upon a Time is not set in the 80's. It's set in the current time. The town of Storybrooke was created in the 80's if we go by the year 2011 and subtract 28 years. :)

  8. I am guessing that it was just mostly that side of the rack which was 1980's comic mags and that the other sides might be from other yrs since of course it takes place in the current time. Wonder why the 2 others on that side not identified were not 1980s.

    1. One of the unmarked comics is actually a Lost shout out. The description for the pic has been updated with info about the other non-80's comics.

  9. It definitely seems as if the Mayor's house is up to date, but everywhere else is living in the past.
Also, I'm trying to figure out why there are so many desks and computers set up in the sheriff's office if there are only ever 2 employees...

  10. Does the Fantastic Four comic #263 have anything to do with the story?

    1. None, that we can see. It appears to be a simple shout out to the 80's and, of course, Disney owns Marvel.

  11. I noticed that in the newest episode, Sydney talks about putting a GPS on Regina's car. GPS' did not exist in the 80's. Also, Emma's cell phone looks like a modern phone, not the Zach Morris type of cell phone.

This page is dedicated to spotting items from the 80's. It's not meant to suggest that the show is taking place in the 80's. :)

  12. If it's in current time then you are looking at a time warps keeping certain items around like is was in the 80's still.

  13. The fire truck is Red from the movies Cars and Cars 2.

  14. In the latest episode, Regina gives Henry a video game,Space Paranoids, which was a game Flynn invented in the original TRON. Kitsis and Horowitz, the OUAT creators also wrote the screenplay for TRON Legacy

    1. Thanks for the reminder. The game's been mentioned on the Stuff From 1x13 page but we forgot to move it here too.

  15. Long as they don't have the 80s hair.

  16. ~Jade:
Like the writers said, it's not set completely in a certain time. It's IN 2011-2012, but since Fairy tales are timeless, they felt Storybrooke should be too.
P.S. hey, don't mess with my rubix cube!Love those things, I have 2 of them.

  17. Maybe there is a lot of older stuff because no one ever comes and goes so they don't get shipments of new stuff very often and use older stuff a lot more.

  18. In one episode, we can see that Mary Margaret's has a cell-phone that is really old, not from the 80s, but it is not a modern cell phone.
